Benny and Karin Steveninck
The Steveninck name has been one of the top established names in Belgian pigeon racing for many years. In the early 21st century, Benny and Karin conquered the middle distance, with the absolute standard-bearer ‘Chipo’, who has now become the basic cock of the present colony. Meanwhile, Benny and Karin have extended their area of work from middle distance to long distance with great success. Even flights from 600 to 700 km seem to suit descendants of ‘Chipo’ perfectly, as can be seen from the national victory at Limoges yearlings in 2009 and the zonal victory at the Gueret national in 2010.
As indicated above, Benny and Karin’s breeding lofts revolve around 'Chipo' and his descendants. ‘Chipo’ was himself first prov. Ace Pigeon at Middle Distance in the KBDB East-Flanders, and then went on to bring a number of top pigeons into the world, like 'Chihaut 100’, ‘Chihaut 98' and his nest brother 'Crack'.
The best of ‘Chipo’s’ sons is probably ‘Chihaut 98’, which—as its name suggests—was also born from the coupling with Michel Hautekiet’s ‘89. ‘Chihaut ‘98’ achieved an unprecedented list of achievements, with as many as nine victories, 62 prizes and 47 prizes per ten. He came 2nd, 4th and 7th in the Provincial Ace Pigeon Middle Distance KBDB East Flanders and 3rd in the National KDBD Ace Pigeon Middle Distance in 2008.
His nine victories (without double entries) are:,
1st at Noyon against 539 p. 2005
1st at Dourdan against 517 p. 2005
1st at Angerville against 344 p. 2009
1st at Dourdan against 342 p. 2006
1st at Dourdan against 320 p. 2008
1st at Dourdan against 227 p. 2005
1st at Dourdan against 226 p. 2006
1st at Noyon against 181 p. 2007
Meanwhile, ‘Chihaut ‘98’ has also proven himself to be a worthy successor to Chipo as a breeder. In the stockloft, his children were crossed with fresh blood from August Wouters (daughter of 1st nat. Ace Pigeon Speed 2009) and Hubert Schroyens who in 2010 gave birth to the 5th, 369th and 462nd nat. Gueret against 13,885 pigeons, 93rdprov. Bourges against 6371 pigeons and 18th Bourges prov. La Souterraine against 4081 pigeons. Moreover, ‘Chihaut 98’ is himself the father of ‘Miss Lucky’, 1st prov. La Souterraine against 3823 pigeons in 2011 and 37th prov. Argenton against 4464 p. in 2011 when he was paired with August Wouters’ ‘Daughter Blue Dream’.

Racing system for old birds
Benny and Karin race both cocks and hens on widowhood, with the partners of the racers always staying at home. This system requires three lofts. Two for the cocks on top of the garage, and one for the hens in the garden. The hens are only raced with year birds.
The racers are simultaneously paired with the breeders in late November for winter breeding. A second pairing follows in late March and after a few days of brooding, widowhood begins. During this second pairing, the pigeons are also trained seven or eight times.

In terms of feed, Benny and Karin are supporters of the Elite Enzymix Modern System from Beyers. This is a three-phase system that meets the requirements of modern pigeon racing, consisting of a low-protein, carbohydrate mixture for the start of the week to help speed up recovery; a mixture with a balanced ratio of proteins, fats and carbohydrates in the middle of the week; and a fat mixture used just before basketing.

In the medical field, Benny and Karin rely entirely on Piet Blancke. He checks the birds before moulting and before the season begins and Benny attaches particular importance to getting the birds protected during the winter. This includes a vaccination against paratyphoid, which is also repeated before the season begins.
During the racing season, Piet Blancke’s system means being on the ball with a three-course rotation during which measures are taken alternately against trichomoniasis, coccidiosis and respiratory infections.
